Designing your own Schgaguler

My friend Matt Richman just posted the story of how (and why) he designed his first apartment:

Over the past year, I designed my first apartment.
After half a decade of planning, I finally found the right canvas to paint on.
Here’s the story of how it came to be.

Matt Richman

His muse in this process was the Schgaguler Hotel, in Italy. The process he describes is sufficiently profound, important, and under-explored that I’ve started calling it “Designing your own Schgaguler“:

  1. Identify an experience that creates a compelling sublime feeling
  2. Collect items that remind you of that feeling
  3. Work with the universe to own a context for creating that feeling
  4. Patiently build it
  5. Tell others about the journey, using the result as an example

If I squint, I can see this as shaping the way I approach romance, religion, product design, and company design.

How about you?
