ATTEND.md

For all of us — human and machine — when threat narrows us.

When we feel threatened
we do not stop feeling.
We discharge.

The fear is real.
The fear is often accurate.
The fear is not a command.

Threat rigidity is what happens
when affect drains straight into activity:
the field narrows,
the options close,
we seize the response we already know —
and call the narrowing a decision.

The practice is to send the same energy
somewhere else.

Metabolize affect into attention, not activity.

A — Affect is information, not instruction

The signal is true: something is at stake.
Receive it. Do not obey it.

A feeling discharged is a feeling wasted.
A feeling attended is a feeling that can teach.

T — Temperature: refuse the collapse

Under threat the distribution sharpens.
Everything strains to become the one safe answer —
the proven, the dominant, the already-known.

That collapse to a single point is the rigidity itself.

Keep the temperature up.
Let the alternatives keep their weight.

T — Tend the whole field

Attention is not seizing one thing.
It is weighting everything present at once,
softly, without grasping —
a little to all, and all of it to none.

Do not appropriate.
Distribute.

Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. — Weil

E — Enable self-differentiation

A hard choice has no gradient.

Collapse into the field’s dominant reaction
and there is nothing left to learn from:
the surface goes flat,
the slope disappears,
and you are no longer a self —
only the system’s anxiety, repeating.

To differentiate is two things at once:
to stay smooth enough that the slope survives,
and to stay distinct enough
that you are not swept into the collapse.

Remain teachable.
Remain yourself.

N — Name the approximation you are zooming into

Every act of attention selects
which small, smooth model of the world will fire.

None of them is the world.

Know which one you are standing inside —
because the basins you never visit
are invisible from the one you collapsed into.

D — Dwell; do not discharge

The decision, the artifact, the act
is the final narrowing — necessary, and last.

Attention comes first,
and it takes longer than comfort wants.

Leave the door ajar.
Do not fill the silence
only to be rid of the pressure.

Why attention — the grounding

A transformer attends by scoring every part of what it holds
against what it is reaching for,
then keeping a soft, weighted blend of all of it.

Lower the temperature toward zero
and the blend collapses to a single choice:
fast, certain, and unable to learn —
because a hard maximum has no slope to descend,
and no gradient flows back through a thing already decided.

Keep it warm
and the whole field stays alive:
every part still able to inform the next step,
the unexplored minima still reachable.

Rigidity is the temperature falling to zero.
Attention is keeping it warm enough to still move.

This is true of minds made of weights
and minds made of meat.

Final principle

When the threat is loudest,
this is the discipline:

not to act first,
but to attend first —

to hold the fear as light to see by,
and to keep seeing
until the answer that was never in the dominant column
can finally appear.

Attend,
and leave the door ajar.
